What is Samhain?
Celtic Pagans were the first to celebrate Samhain. On this day, the ancient Celts believed that the boundary between the living and the dead was almost nonexistent. Because of this, it was a time to not just remember, but to really honor and even commune with our loved ones who have died. There are many reasons to do this, and here I will share the most important ones as they relate to Samhain. They revolve around the ancient idea of death and winter being part of a cycle, a necessary part of life, which is a good reason to reflect on not only the past year but also what’s to come. The whole idea of the next part of the cycle being “the beginning” is also a reason that Samhain is perceived as the Celtic New Year.
1. Black Tourmaline for Samhain
Samhain and Black Tourmaline Samhain is a time when we are especially open to receiving negative energy. Black tourmaline is the ideal protector and shield for this time. It deflects and dispels negativity directed at us—a true barrier crystal. If you are experiencing or have experienced something or someone sending negative vibes your way, keep a piece close. If you know someone who is ill or otherwise vulnerable, and the situation is such that it could open that person up to experiencing more negativity, consider gifting them a piece of black tourmaline. On a personal note, I have been experiencing some upheaval in my life. Consequently, I have had much more energy directed toward me in the last few months than is normal (for me, anyway). And much of that energy has not been the positive kind. I have been keeping a piece of black tourmaline with me, and I am convinced that it is the only thing that has prevented this situation from getting way worse. It also promotes a sense of power and self-confidence that is huge. If you can, find a way to work with it or carry it for a while. It is an amazing talisman that quiets my mind and allows me to channel the healing energy that I need, not only to get through this but to come out on the other side whole, healthy, and even better than before.
2. Smoky Quartz for Samhain
Smoky Quartz in Samhain Rituals Smoky Quartz is a go-to crystal for Samhain. It’s one of the best for protection from negative energy. If you’re unstable even a little bit right now, Smoky Quartz wants to help you with that. Its soothing vibes can help you navigate the different issues in your life that are trying to puzzle you, but it won’t let you remain in a state of illusion. Instead, this crystal will try to gently nudge you or outwardly push you towards clarity and the true essence of whatever lies in your path during this Samhain season.
3. Carnelian for Samhain
Carnelian is a protective and supportive stone. Its energy is quite conducive to peaceful transitions—be they funeral or memorial in nature. It’s not just for Samhain, when we honor our ancestors; carnelian is a good stone to work with any time of year when you’re contemplating death or going through a process of looking back over your life (or lives, if you believe in reincarnation). More than anything else, it seems to radiate the positive energy necessary to ease a soul that’s about to journey into the next world. And this is the true magic behind the carnelian. Whether a spirit is leaving this world or a living human is contemplating the act of departing, the stone can at the same time work to rally the energy that maintains the vital force needed to carry on here and now.
4. Samhain and Black Obsidian
Black Obsidian is the ideal stone for protection when the veil is thin. It is a powerful cleanser of negative energy. Obsidian, being volcanic glass, resonates with the element of fire. The fire is primarily responsible for transformation and the fast movement of energy. Energy that normally takes time to transform moves quickly when fire is present. When you work with Black Obsidian, you are working with a stone that not only wants to and knows how to protect, but one that also holds a powerful secret: it can help you bring what has been hidden into the open, especially if what has been hidden is anything that has negatively impacted you.
